According to the latest "container port performance index (CPPI) in 2021" report of the world bank, Lagos port ranks 358th among the 370 ports in the world.
According to the report, the top two container ports in CPPI in 2021 are King Abdullah port (Saudi Arabia) and Salalah port (Oman).
The world bank highlighted some consequences of poor port performance, including that low port efficiency will lead to a shortage of necessities and rising prices in the short term. In the medium and long term, it will further lead to slower economic growth, reduced employment and higher import and export costs.
The report further points out that the poor performance of ports is often due to the lack of predictability and reliability due to space and operational efficiency constraints, restrictions on sea and land access, inadequate supervision and poor coordination among relevant public agencies.
According to relevant reports, there are signs that due to the collapse of tin can and APAPA terminals, more goods in Nigeria may soon be diverted to the ports of nei***oring West African countries, as well as the rise in freight.
Shipping experts said that the shipping companies were afraid of berthing in the affected ports and chose to divert the goods to West African ports, or the freight rate would rise.
